Memphis Boy Comes Home for Rare Performance

Friday, October 22, 2010
Hard Rock Café – Memphis, TN
Zach Myers Band

Zach Myers looks back on a photo of the group from when he was just 14 years old.
It seems a rarity that I actually get to see a rock show at home nowadays. There just don’t seem to be that many coming through Memphis as compared to some other nearby cities. But this night was an exception as hometown boy Zach Myers took a break from touring with mega-group Shinedown for a rare performance with his original namesake band, the Zach Myers Band.

I guess you could call him a guitar virtuoso.  He started playing when he was just 13 years old. By the time he was 14, the Zach Myers Band had formed and would go on to record two records and tour five countries. The band’s music is a cool mix of blues, rock, jazz, funk and probably some other strange genres too. But it makes for a great live show.
There wasn’t a huge crowd in attendance, but the crowd represented fans and musicians alike. Members of local bands like Egypt Central, Sore Eyes, Prosevere and others were all there. It said a lot about how well liked Myers is among his peers.

My highlight from the show was the band’s cover of “Voodoo Child,” originally performed by Jimi Hendrix. The band had a lot of energy during this song, and the crowd gave it right back singing along with the familiar words. I think I even saw an air guitar or two among the fans (myself not included.)

Bottom line: Zach Myers Band = 1 good time!
